“Our missiles can strike Europe.” This was the warning issued by Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations office in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, during a statement to international media on Friday.
Bahreini stated that the Iranian military will target any military infrastructure used by the United States to launch attacks against Iran.
“Let me be clear: our military forces have announced a policy according to which any facility or base used to attack Iran will be considered a legitimate target for our forces,” he said.
When asked whether this could also include bases in Europe, the Iranian diplomat responded that his country would act to defend its national security. “We will defend our country in whatever way is necessary to ensure its safety and to make sure there is no aggression against us,” Bahreini added.
The statements from the senior official in Tehran come as the conflict in the Middle East has entered its third week, with tensions continuing to rise across several countries in the region.
In his interview at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, the Iranian ambassador also criticized the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing them as violations of international law. He also rejected accusations that Iran had targeted civilian sites in Gulf countries, claiming that all strikes carried out in neighboring states were aimed at enemy military bases.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that ending the war would require recognition of Iran’s legitimate rights, the payment of compensation, and international guarantees against future aggression.
Despite these statements, peace in the Middle East does not appear to be near. Iran has launched dozens of strikes targeting Gulf countries and has even crossed NATO airspace with its missiles, reportedly targeting Turkey — a member of the alliance — at least three times.
