The US has lifted sanctions on 140 million barrels of Iranian oil, while the Trump administration sought to lower gas prices.
Ambassador Mike Waltz, speaking to CNN, defended the move, describing it as “very temporary.”
President Donald Trump said on Friday he was considering “rolling back” on military operations against Iran, following this temporary relief of sanctions on Iranian oil shipments to stop a global supply crisis.
Trump said on his Social Truth platform that the US is “coming very close to meeting our objectives as we consider reducing our major military efforts in the Middle East.”
His post was the strongest indication yet that he may be prepared to soon end the hostilities that began on February 28.
White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said on X shortly after Trump’s message: “The President and the Pentagon anticipated it would take approximately 4-6 weeks to accomplish this mission.”
Amid growing concern about oil prices and global supply shortages, the U.S. Treasury said it was temporarily lifting sanctions on Iranian oil that had already been loaded onto ships. The authorization allowed the delivery and sale of Iranian crude oil and other petroleum products loaded onto ships before March 20 and would last until April 19, it said.
