Police announced on Sunday morning that an inmate convicted of domestic violence has died at the University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” (QSUT), after being admitted to intensive care as a result of cardiac arrest.
This marks the fifth case since the end of January this year in which the General Directorate of Prisons has reported the death of inmates, mostly linked to health problems.
Just two days earlier, on April 3, another detainee, Medat Spahiu, died in the same ward due to a pulmonary embolism.
Meanwhile, on March 30, a prisoner serving a life sentence, Hysni Qamil Repaj, was urgently transported to the regional hospital in Korça but did not survive following a sudden deterioration of his health condition.
Earlier, on March 20, a 41-year-old man arrested for a minor criminal offense died in the Security Block in Tirana. Authorities stated that natural causes are suspected, but investigations are ongoing.
The first case in this series dates back to January 25, when a 20-year-old young man died in Shkodra prison.
Five deaths in such a short period have raised concerns about what is happening in prisons, particularly regarding inmates with health issues and whether they are receiving proper medical treatment while serving their sentences.
So far, authorities have not provided a comprehensive response linking all these cases, but investigations into each incident are ongoing.
