U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States sent weapons intended for Iranian protesters through Kurdish forces, apparently confirming reports from CNN last month. Trump made this statement in an interview with Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst this morning.
“We sent them a lot of weapons”
“President Trump told me that the United States sent weapons to Iranian protesters. He told me: ‘We sent them a lot of weapons. We sent them through the Kurds,’” Yingst shared details of the phone conversation.
The journalist added that President Trump believes the Kurds kept those weapons for themselves.
Specifically, CNN reported last month that the U.S. was arming Kurdish groups with the aim of encouraging a popular uprising in Iran. The plan was for Kurdish armed forces to clash with Iranian forces, which would make it easier for Iranian civilians to take to the streets and protest.
Hegseth had previously claimed this was not true.
Following those reports, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told journalists that U.S. objectives are not based on arming specific groups.
“None of our objectives rely on supporting the arming of any particular force. We are aware of what other entities may be doing, but our goals are not directed toward that,” Hegseth said at the time.
