The new Supreme Leader, successor to his father, Mojtaba Khamenei, is reportedly in a coma and has also lost one of his legs.
Citing a source in the Iranian capital, Tehran, the newspaper The Sun wrote that Mojtaba Khamenei has suffered serious injuries to his stomach or liver.
It is further reported that the new leader is currently in intensive care at Sina University Hospital in the historic district of the city. Security forces are said to have sealed off part of the building.
According to internal sources, hospital staff said Mojtaba was in a “very serious” condition and under the care of Mohammad Reza Zafargjani. In addition to being Iran’s Minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, Zafargjani is also considered one of the country’s top surgeons.
The source said:
“One or two of his legs have been amputated. His liver or stomach has also been ruptured. He also appears to be in a coma.”
It is not known whether Mojtaba Khamenei’s injuries were sustained in the same attack that killed his 86-year-old father, Ali Khamenei.
