Mickoski: No one is against the Albanian language, but the Macedonian language is official across the entire territory

The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, during today’s parliamentary session for MPs’ questions, emphasized that the Law on Fair Representation, after passing all the necessary filters and receiving a recommendation from the Venice Commission, will soon be presented to Parliament.

Regarding remarks about the use of languages, he underlined that no one is against the use of any other language, but reminded that according to the Constitution, the official language throughout the entire territory of the country is the Macedonian language with its Cyrillic alphabet.

“I expect the Law on Fair Representation to be brought before the MPs soon, since it has passed all the filters, including that of the Venice Commission. With the recommendations of the Venice Commission, it will be adopted in Parliament, it will proceed to the Government, and I hope you will support it. But it is constitutional, not unconstitutional as you and the coalition you belong to have misled Albanians in Macedonia for more than 20 years. This is the difference between this government and this coalition and the coalition you support,” Prime Minister Mickoski said while responding to the question of MP Skender Rexhepi.

Regarding the use and recognition of languages, Prime Minister Mickoski stressed that, according to the Constitution, the Macedonian language is the official language throughout the entire territory and pointed out to MP Rexhepi that, as can be seen, he does not need translation headphones to understand it, but if he uses them, there is also translation into Albanian.

“No language in the world bothers me and none ever will. I don’t know why you are concerned, but according to the Constitution, the official language throughout the entire territory is the Macedonian language with the Cyrillic alphabet. There are additions in the following article, further additions for local self-government units where over 20% are ethnic communities that use their own language — there is the Turkish, Serbian, Bosniak community — it does not bother me; use the Albanian language freely. In fact, I am trying to learn and master it as well. The more languages I know, the richer I am,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
