Former Kosovo Police Director: The Highest Number of Murders Occurs in These Months

Reshat Maliqi, former director of the Kosovo Police, has said that based on his experience, the months of March, April, and May are when the highest number of murders occur.

Early Monday morning, one person was killed and another was injured in Gjakova.

Regarding this case, Maliqi said he believes in the professionalism of his former colleagues and that the suspect in this murder, who is currently on the run, will be arrested.

Speaking on Tëvë1, Maliqi said that despite such incidents, Kosovo in general ranks much higher than countries in the region in terms of security.

“From my many years of experience, having spent 50 years in uniform, the spring months are the most dangerous months when such cases occur, disputes among citizens. Now we already have a more favorable climate; usually in the months of March, April, and May the number of murders is the highest, while the other months are calmer. We believe that regarding the overall security situation, Kosovo stands best in the region with the lowest number when it comes to murders,” he said.

The Regional Directorate of Police in Gjakova has provided details about what is known so far regarding the killing and the injury in the Old Bazaar area of Gjakova.

Police spokesperson Sheremet Elezaj told the media that they were informed about the case in the early hours of the morning.

At the scene, Elezaj said that relevant police units are still present and are working to clarify the case.

Meanwhile, by order of the State Prosecutor, the body of the 38-year-old victim has been sent for autopsy to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Pristina, while the injured person has been sent for medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

According to the authorities, the suspect in this case has already been identified, as he is a known name to the police, but he is still wanted.

He added that the investigation is in its initial phase and that they are obliged to keep the motive for the murder confidential for now.

“In close cooperation with the Kosovo Police, all necessary actions are being undertaken with the aim of locating and arresting the suspect, who has already been identified and is currently wanted,” the police spokesperson said.
