The Law on Price Caps – Murati Provides Details

The Minister of Finance, Hekuran Murati, authorized by Minister Mimoza Kusari-Lila, today presented to the Assembly the draft law on Temporary Measures for Essential Products in Special Cases of Market Destabilization, also known as the Law on Price Caps.

According to him, this draft law aims to introduce measures to protect consumers and the public interest.

“This draft law is a political and state response to a real need of the citizens of Kosovo, so that the state does not remain a mere spectator when the prices of basic products go beyond economic logic and directly burden our families,” Murati said at the Assembly podium. “This draft law aims to establish temporary and proportionate measures for essential products in cases of market destabilization, with a clear focus on protecting consumers and the public interest.”

Furthermore, Murati stated that this draft law is not against businesses, but rather draws a line between legitimate profit and abuse during times of crisis.

“So, we are dealing with an extraordinary instrument for extraordinary situations, not a permanent mechanism for intervention in the economy. For this reason, this draft law is not against business nor against the free market; on the contrary, it is a law for order and predictability.”
