Sadik Zeqiri, a survivor of the Dubrava Massacre, has reacted to the exhibition “Massacres in Kosovo 1998–1999” organized by Shkëlzen Gashi.
He recounted his experiences in prison and said that Serbian forces “killed them wherever they found them,” adding that he does not know what Gashi based his claims on when stating that the prisoners who were killed had been armed.
“During the massacre, from March 19–24, which the author has written as May 19–23, they lined all of us up or shot at us to kill us wherever they could and wherever they found us. As for where Shkëlzen Gashi based the claim that 48 of the killed prisoners were armed, I don’t know. But I do know that all of us were unarmed and almost all of us were members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, but imprisoned,” the former prisoner said.
Zeqiri even stated that they did not have aluminum spoons there, let alone weapons as suggested in the exhibition’s content.
“When it is said that the prisoners were armed, it implies that we had weapons and confronted guards, police officers, and Serbian soldiers, which would mean we were in a direct battle with the Serbian side. Shkëlzen Gashi — and those non-governmental organizations that received funds and organized this exhibition — have forgotten that in Dubrava Prison we, as prisoners, did not even have aluminum spoons; we hardly even had shoelaces, let alone weapons,” Zeqiri added.
